Another Sunday – another washout! That was the story again last Sunday as Clacton Ramblers saw another of their PiriPiri League games succumb to the atrocious summer weather we are experiencing. Of the eleven league games that the Eastcliff side should have played, five have either been cancelled or abandoned because of rain. The derby fixture on Great Bentley Green was yet another victim, with the home side probably greeting the intervention of the storms with some enthusiasm.
Batting first, Great Bentley had been managed to reach 94 for 6 wickets from 30 overs before proceedings were called to a halt. Ramblers’ Stefan Gericke had proved to be virtually unplayable, claiming four victims for just nine runs in seven overs. Scott Facey and Ben Cooper had also picked up a wicket apiece, and 94 represented something of a recovery as Tim Maskell (29 not out) and Len Claydon (14 not out), with the aid of 17 extras, put together an unbroken partnership of 60. However, this all counted for nothing as the dark clouds gathered and dropped their contents.
Next Sunday the Ramblers will try once more to get a completed game of cricket when they visit Great Horkesley. The village side actually play their home games at Abberton Cricket Club, and the start time is 1.00 pm.
